The Redlands Daily Facts was alerted that a Highland woman who worked at Jo-Ann's lost her job in the home stretch of her cancer ordeal. She is not planning to sue; she just wants her job back. Reporter Kristina Hernandez and photographer John Valenzuela told her story:

- The story spread nationwide quickly, and talk of boycott was fast on the heels of the news:
- What does it say about corporate America that after 20 plus years she was only making $10 and hour and a little over a year ago had her hours cut so that they wouldn't have to pay health benefits. Jo-Anns, this one case is an easy one to fix. Step up to the plate and do the right thing for this long-time worker.

However, from working in HR for 12 years I do know that there are employment policies that they have to follow each and every time to insure that EVERYONE is treated the same. It is not always popular with others, but it keeps the business out of litigation and unfair employment practices and litigation. Unfortunately that is the state of our world - one instance of treating someone different and boom - it could be a huge lawsuit. Joann had a right to do what they did - however unpopular it may be. Lawsuits are bad for everyone - mostly consumers who end up paying more for the product because someone has to pay for the attorney time and fees. Joann's acted prudently in protecting the company. They did say she could reapply when she was ready to return correct? The letter the company sent was SOP - let's see what they do when she reapplies for her job before we hang them high.more2012-11-30T23:32:19.383Z
