Climate angels send message to the United States from Melbourne

As many Americans participated in #notmypresident day, a group of climate guardian angels portended to the US consulate in Melbourne, Australia to highlight Trump administration attack on climate science and climate action.

  1. The Climate Guardian Angels carried a banner saying 'All lives depend on a safe climate, Keep coal, oil and gas in the ground', with a red ribbon brought back from the Paris climate conference in 2015. It signifies a redline not to be crossed. The protest was undertaken to make a peaceful statement about the necessity of urgent action on climate change and the important role for the United States. But it was also to protest the Trump regime appointing people like Rex Tillerson, former CEO of Exxon Mobil as Secretary of State; and Scott Pruitt as Director of the EPA. The Trump regime is full of fossil fuel industry people and climate denialists.
  2. From the media release:

Climate Guardians have descended on the U.S. Consulate in Melbourne this morning to demand urgent action to protect the global climate and decry the apparent hijacking of U.S. politics by the fossil fuel industry. Climate Guardians’ spokesperson Deborah Hart said:

“The window of opportunity to avoid the worst impacts of dangerous climate change is closing fast as the world recognized in the landmark 2015 Paris Agreement.”

"President Trump’s naïve “America First” rhetoric runs the risk of undermining international cooperation and condemning the world (including Americans) to a toxic and very bleak future. By way of contrast the Democratic party platform formulated under former Secretary of State and Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton acknowledged that the world faces a climate emergency and pledged to take decisive action to address it.”

“In many ways “America First” really appears to be a Trojan horse for “Fossil Fuels first”. This is highlighted by the rapid scrapping of key environmental protections, the choice of former ExxonMobil CEO Rex Tillerson as Secretary of State and the confirmation of Scott Pruitt as head of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, despite him having led multiple law suits against the EPA.”

There is overwhelming consensus among reputable scientists that pollution caused by human activity (including carbon dioxide and methane) is the key driver of recent global temperature increases and that (unless curbed urgently) the earth as we know it will be fundamentally changed with dire consequences for human civilization.
