  1. Austin Galovski '16 is from Pittsford, NY and is majoring in Public Relations at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications.
  2. What is your favorite thing/part about Syracuse?
  3. Nothing can compare to SU’s student culture. There is unbelievable energy and camaraderie on this campus. There are certain experiences, like Marshall Street on game day, Walnut Park on the first real day of spring, and South Campus packed with people before Juice Jam, that don’t exist anywhere else, and I consider myself very lucky to have chosen this school.
  4. What is your favorite class to date?
  5. I took a public relations ethics class with Professor Michael Meath during my junior year, and I think it taught me more than any other class I’ve ever taken. It was all about applying your skills to real life situations (which, I learned, are far messier than textbook examples) and preserving your integrity and morality while still being an effective working professional in the public relations world.
  6. If you could tell a new or incoming student just ONE thing about SU, what it would be?
  7. Talk to everyone, and do as much as you can. Some of the best opportunities come out of the weirdest places, and I don’t think I’ve ever gotten a single job through a traditional application process.
  8. Hi! My name is Austin Galovski and I'm a graduating senior at Newhouse. I come from Pittsford, NY, a suburb just outside of Rochester, and I've worked in the Rochester, Syracuse and Buffalo areas. Currently, I work with the Office of News Services, generating online, multimedia content. I'm an active member in my fraternity, planning philanthropy and fundraising events, and I've also spent quite a bit of time working with the Student Association doing various PR events and election campaigning. I can't wait to take this week to show you guys some of my favorite spots and activities here on campus, and share some happy memories of my four awesome years at Syracuse University! Thank you! - AG #SyracuseU

  9. Big shoutout to Professor Shirilan for always finding time to meet with students. I'm currently enrolled in her advanced Shakespeare class, and although I read The Tempest back in high school, it can't compare to the quality of lecture I'm getting here. As a PR major, writing is a huge part of what I do, and the exposure to different forms of literature is hugely valuable. I'm well on my way to completing an ETS minor, and looking forward to wrapping up this last semester of classes! - AG #SyracuseU

  10. After almost four years, Newhouse still amazes me. Yes, it's a beautiful building, but even more importantly, I never leave feeling anything but motivated. This specific stretch through Newhouse 3 is one of my favorite places to buckle in and grind out some work, usually packed into a booth with my friends and classmates. The massive, glass-walled computer lab has every resource an aspiring communications professional could ask for, and the food.com cafe is right around the corner. It's a perfect setup; you couldn't beat it if you tried. - AG #SyracuseU

  11. Marshall Street in the snow...I can't imagine something more SU than that! After some unseasonal warm weather, it's finally starting to feel more like home. - AG #SyracuseU

  12. Congratulations to the team of scientists, and now astronomers, who proved the existence of gravitational waves in a groundbreaking discovery! This affirms a prediction made by Einstein over 100 years ago, fulfilling his theory of relativity. I was fortunate enough to be a part of the Office of News Services' media team covering the event, and got to hear firsthand from members of the collaborative team involved in the discovery. It's a good day to be Orange! - AG #SyracuseU

  13. Got to spend part of my afternoon with Steven Lobello learning about the light board, a tool available for professors so that they can now easily teach online classes and share lectures with their students electronically. The light board functions as a whiteboard, operating through a combination of a sheet of glass rigged with LED lighting and fluorescent markers for writing. We'll have a video online showcasing the whole setup some time next week, so make sure to check back in if you're interested! Yet another example of how my job with the university lets me meet some awesomely creative people and learn about the latest in academic technology. - AG #SyracuseU
