- We gathered here in the European Youth Capital Varna this week, 150 Roma and non-Roma Changemakers from all over Europe. We worked together in our teams for the whole week and we collected our thoughts how to make Europe a better place for all.
As our conclusion we wrote a “So Keres Manifest”. When we go home our “So Keres Movement” will not stop. We are just in the beginning. Our Manifest always reminds us who we are and what we stand for. But our Manifest also tells to the outside world that we are a strong group of committed people to bring change to our communities and societies.
We gathered here to raise our voices against injustice and racismtowards Roma in Bulgaria and in Europe:
What’s up, Europa?! So Keres, Europa?!
We stand for equal rightsand participation!
We resist and fight againstantigypsyism and injustice!

So Keres, Europa
What’s up, Europe?!
What’s wrong, Europe?!
I open my eyes
I see hate
I see violence
I see evictions
Where is your respect?
Where is your humanity?
Where is our equality?
Where are my rights?
I stand here today
We stand together
Brothers and sisters
Together we fight.

Changemakers -Who we are
- We, 150 Roma and non-Roma Changemakers from all over Europe gathered in Varna (Bulgaria) as the European Youth Capital 2017, raise our voices against injustice and racism towards Roma in Bulgaria and in Europe: What’s up, Europa?! So Keres, Europa?!
What we believe in! What we do! What we want!
We believe in equal rightsfor all people. There cannot be equality if there is no real participation andif we do not name and fight antigypsyism and discrimination. Governments andsociety are responsible to respect and treat Roma as equal citizens.
We believe in equal rights, but there cannot be equality without real participation. We believe in a Europe where Roma can fully and equally participate in the life of our democratic societies.
We are aware: Participation is our right and fundamental to change our societies.
We create the space for young people to become active citizens through participation, empowerment, mobilization and self-organization.
We demand the governments to strengthen the participation of young people and youth organizations.
We believe in equal rights, but there cannot be equality in Europe if we do not name and fight against antigypsyism and all forms of racism and discrimination.
We are aware of what’s happening in Europe now: forced evictions, hate crimes, hate speech, discrimination and denial of citizen’s rights are daily reality of many Roma.
We humanity feel the responsibility and urgency to speakup against injustice and racism.
We demand from all EU and Council of Europe Member States to make the fight against antigypsyism the basis of all Roma-related policies, and to recognize the Roma Genocide and to mark 2 August as the “European Roma Holocaust Memorial Day”. #RomaGenocide #2August
How we work:Our commitment! Our principles! Our tactics!
- We build an alliance of solidarity:
We believe in the common efforts by creating trust and mutual respect between Roma and non-Roma youth. We believe and invest in the alliances of people and oppressed communities where we learn from and support each other.
- Voluntary action:
We create opportunities for non-formal education, dialogue and engagement, in order to challenge stereotypes and racism.
We mobilize and self-organizeas a movement:
We call upon all people to join and mobilize in a movement for a better Europe, to share and spread the values of solidarity, to take action and build peace. Youth organizations are the main tool to advance our cause, build community and take action.
Empowerment is our key:
It is the responsibility of majority society to stop antigypsyism. But we believe in the power of those who have been silenced by antigypsyism so far. We create space for young Roma to become active citizens and to become agents of change in their communities and societies.
It’s our time of resistance:
We face violence, racism and injustice in our societies. It is our right and duty to react, to protect our communities, and to resist until Roma are treated as equal citizens. Individual and collective action and opposition are key to create a just society.
We claim our space and power in mainstream structures:
We call upon the institutions to recognize our full participation.
But we the people cannot just wait any longer for institutions to take responsibility.
We are aware of our rights, and we claim our space now. With strong Roma youth organizations we build our power, and we strive and proclaim our space in mainstream structures!
We challenge Roma representation in the media and public: We challenge the representation of Roma in mainstream society, in media and cultural representations. We take over our narratives today.
