Calluses are composed of the same material as corns. Calluses, however, develop on the ball or heel of the foot. The skin on the sole of the foot is ordinarily about 40 times thicker than the skin anywhere else on the body, but a callus can even be twice as thick. A protective callus layer naturally develops to guard against excessive pressure and chafing as people get older and the padding of fat on the bottom of the foot thins out. If calluses get too big or too hard, they may pull and tear the underlying skin. Achilles Tendinitis. Achilles tendinitis is an inflammation of the tendon that connects the calf muscles to the heel bone. Achilles tendinitis is caused by small tears in the tendon from overuse or injury. The problem with high heels is that your bodyweight is not evenly distributed across the underside of the foot, but rather 80% of your weight pushes down on only one area of the foot, the forefoot area. i.e. the balls of your feet. This is totally unnatural and before long the entire forefoot structure collapses, leading to constant pressure and friction in the ball of the foot. The body reacts and builds up thick layers of callous in this area which in turn leads to a burning sensation under the foot. If the foot pain is caused by plantar fasciitis, it may respond to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications, daily application of ice to the heel, and use of orthotics to better support the heel and arch. Although calf stretching exercises are often recommended, there's little evidence that they actually help. Injection Lumbar Pain of corticosteroids into the heel may give some temporary relief, but can lead to complications such as rupture of the plantar fascia. A newer treatment called extracorporeal shock wave therapy that uses sound waves has been approved for treatment of plantar fasciitis, but is usually reserved for resistant cases. To get at the source of the problem, you have to give your arch some help and support. Try wearing an arch strapping This will add support to your arch. If the strapping does not provide enough relief, pick up some arch supports. You should be able to find them (probably by Dr. Scholls) at a drug store. They raise the arch and shift burden off the heel. By wearing these you also give the fascia a little slack - the arch doesn't have to stretch as far. If the strapping and the arch supports together are not enough, try adding heel pads. If you are a sufferer of side of foot pain it can impact significantly on the quality of your life.   1. Calluses and corns are another common cause of foot pain They are actually patches of thickened skin caused by friction or pressure. Calluses appear on the balls of the feet or on the heels while corns will appear on the toes. Calluses are caused by an accumulation of dead skin cells. In severe cases, the callus has a deep seated core called a nucleation. This type of callus is exceptionally painful. Corns are similar to calluses as they are also thickened patches of dead skin cells which have formed as a protective mechanism against pressures on the foot. Corns however are found on the toes.

    Stress Fracture. A stress fracture in the foot, also called fatigue or march fracture, usually occurs from a break or rupture in any of the five metatarsal bones (mostly in the second or third). If it occurs there, it is more serious than fractures in the other metatarsal bones, because it dramatically changes the pattern of normal walking and weight bearing.     Treatment for Calluses. Calluses protect the feet and often do not need to be treated, but if a callus causes pain, several treatments are effective. Sanding the callus with a pumice stone after bathing is very helpful. Soft cushions placed in the heel of the shoes or under the ball of the foot can help relieve pain. Specially fitted shoe inserts are also helpful. Liquid solutions or medicated pads treated with salicylic acid, the same chemical used to treat corns, are also effective in removing calluses (For precautions, see Corns, above ). If calluses are well-developed and cause pain, professional trimming is recommended.

    Dealing with foot pain can be a tiring process and if left untreated, a lot of pain can persist and develop into long term conditions. Conditions like Shin Splints and plantar fasciitis are both common problems afflicting large numbers of people. The many stresses on our feet lead to these problems, but many people don't take the necessary steps to correct them.
