- Latinos are unique users of the mobile Internet. While they are statistically less likely to have a home broadband connection (only 69%), they lead in mobile phone adoption. 87% of Latinos have a mobile phone
- Another consideration is the language divide amongst Latinos. English speaking Latinos have higher rates of adoption at 81%, followed next by bilingual Latinos at 74%, in sharp comparison with Spanish-dominant Latinos at only 47%.
- Understanding how Latinos consume the Internet is vital to understanding how they operate in the digital marketplace. The total buying power of the Latino community is estimated at $1.2 trillion. However, Latinos do not engage in banking in the same way other demographics. Only a 43% use online banking, representing a minority of the total spending power of the group.
- Further speaking to the power of Latinos is the sheer number of group members eligible to vote. In the most recent election, 10% of the vote was Latino; a number that is expected to double by 2030. Further, Latinos lead in social media engagement. 71% of Hispanics using the Internet are on Facebook, and Latinos lead amongst Twitter users.
- Finally, the panelists spoke to some misconceptions about the Latino population. Latinos are not monolithic. The American Latino population represents multiple income, age, racial and other socio-economic indicators.Organizations and brands interested in connecting with Latinos need to understand that how they connect with Latinos is critical. Latinos are oriented toward mobile, so information must be accessible via smartphones. Finally, marketers must understand that they need to really think about who they want to talk to before they simply translate a message into Spanish. Latino English and Spanish speakers respond to messaging differently. To make sure Latinos are represented at SXSW, the team at VOTIFI is conducting a survey for Latinos to take to highlight the connection between tech and this demographic.
