  1. Example One: ImmigrationLawHelp.org was translated by professional translators, focusing their attentions on the web interface, however the bulk of the data is left untranslated. They also offer a bevy of multimedia content in different languages that is professionally translated, then recorded by a professional native speaker.
  2. While ImmigrationLawHelp.org offers about 12 languages, the best way to identify the languages to present your information is to use Census information or Google Analytics to identify browser language settings.
  3. When working with a translator, ImmigrationLawHelp.org staff recommended that website content managers provide lots of context for the information they are trying to translate, and to use plain English to translate. Also, enlist the assistance of a native speaker to independently review the information.
  4. When designing a website to be translated, be sure to aim for the coding to use the Unicode character set. Further, use text, not images, on buttons, because they cannot be translated. Make sure to leave plenty of room for copy, in case the translated information is longer.
  5. Finally, if you organization is serving multilingual clients  ImmigrationLawHelp.org staff recommend that there be an investment in bilingual staff, make sure collateral matches the website and is properly translated, and try experimenting with Google Ads in different languages.
  6. Example two: The Illinois Legal Aid website is a mirrored website, built in English but translated into Spanish with Google Translate's API. Teri Ross embeds the Google Translate API into their CMS to perform the automated translations. An advantage to the API is that there is no need to recode the website, the API will work with the existing HTML/CSS.
