<![CDATA[Let's Talk About Men]]>

This week the New Statesman put together a series of themed posts based around male issues, identity and discussion. I've collected them all here.

Storified by Joseph Stashko · Fri, May 25 2012 11:15:01

First up was Rhiannon and Holly of Vagenda, talking about the extreme end of the men's rights movement and looking at equality between genders.
Tuesday's entry was Stephen Baxter talking about admitting to male vulnerability and stereotyping men as loud, competitive and boorish.
Wednesday saw two pieces, first, Ally Fogg's excellent and measured review of the Second Sexism, followed by Alex Hern's look at the gender pay gap.
Thursday included a piece by me, which drew on my own experiences to talk about eating disorders suffered by men and the distinct issues that are attached to them.
On Friday, James Ball wrote about promoting more male identity, discussion and acknowledging that yes, men also face complex challenges, as do women. The week was wrapped up with a look at male unemployment rates by Alex Hern.

<![CDATA[Joseph Kony and Invisible Children...the debate]]>

This morning I logged on to find that a half hour video documenting child abduction and young soldiers had gone viral. People were talking about it on Facebook, it was trending on Twitter. Here's what you need to know.

KONY 2012 ·
Good to raise awareness and spread the word, surely? But debates on Facebook soon sprung up about the value of awareness that doesn't translate into action. As seems to be more common these days, Reddit provided some eye-opening details about presenting the other sides of the story.
"Is awareness good? Yes. But these problems are highly complex, not one-dimensional and, frankly, aren’t of the nature that can be solved by postering, film-making and changing your Facebook profile picture, as hard as that is to swallow. "Giving your money and public support to Invisible Children so they can spend it on funding ill-advised violent intervention and movie #12 isn’t helping. Do I have a better answer? No, I don’t, but that doesn’t mean that you should support KONY 2012 just because it’s something. Something isn’t always better than nothing. Sometimes it’s worse."
You can also read the Reddit conversation thread below:
And Matthew Taylor put it like this: "This group sends funds to the Ugandan Army to find someone who likely isn't even in Uganda. "And the Ugandan military are responsible for crimes of their own.Oh and they pay themselves almost $90,000 a year in salary, and it cost $7.5 million to make this video (all marked as expenses)"
Full article here
And a reasoned take on things titled "Bad guys, good guys and the people in between" was flagged up by Daniel Bentley:"Don’t get me wrong. I’m unashamedly hopeful about the ability of humans to change their own situations. But the events of the Arab Spring certainly remind us that lasting change must come from within."
Currently 816 people are signed up to this public Facebook event in Nottingham, to "raise awarness by spreading our message all over the city centre".
"It is hard to respect any documentary on northern Uganda where a five year-old white boy features more prominently than any northern Ugandan victim or survivor. "Incredibly, with the exception of the adolescent northern Ugandan victim, Jacob, the voices of northern Ugandans go almost completely unheard."
And the inevitable Vice article:

police line and protesters on the steps #occupylsx · journodave

"Police and bailiffs have moved in to remove protesters from the Occupy London site at St Paul's Cathedral.

Occupy London was last week refused permission to appeal against a High Court decision to allow their eviction to proceed.

The Court of Appeal's decision meant the City of London Corporation was free to clear the site.

Occupy London, which campaigns against corporate greed, set up the camp on 15 October."

15 fire engines and around 75 firefighters are currently tackling a fire on Wood Lane, Shepherds Bush W12. The fire is at a dairy.

The Brigade was called at 0935. Fire crews from Hammersmith, North Kensington, Willesden, Kensington, Paddington and Chiswick fire stations are attending the incident.

Station Manager Rod Horton said: “The fire is affecting a range of industrial buildings on the dairy site. It’s a challenging and developing incident at the moment and we’re likely to be at the scene for some time.”

"The cause of the fire is not known at this stage."
