  1. People eat food. It is a biological need that humans eat food in order to gain nutrients to survive. The food industry is something that will never die, because humans are always going to need to eat. But, what it has become today is much more than anyone could have ever expected, and many still don't know to quite what extent.

  4. Looking at food statistically, there is a lot to be said. Of all land in the United States, roughly 2.3 billion acres, 500 million acres are used to grow food. Of that 500 million acres, 349 million is used to grow crops to feed animals, the equivalent of four states the size of Montana. Plants such as alfalfa, soy beans and feed corn are used to feed animals such as cattle, chickens and pigs. Only 3 million acres are used to grow vegetables for humans to eat. The other remaining acres are considered personal lands that people use to grow personal crops for their homes.
  5. All of this food is used to feed these animals, but what are they really doing for us? Americans have become addicted to meat, and what is meant by that is Americans have incorporated meat into their diet more that is necessary. Cutting out other forms and only looking at red meat, red meat is high in fat and has complication with preparation and handling. A 2016 literature review reported that " for 100g or more per day of red meat consumed, the risk increases 11% for each of stroke and for breast cancer, 15% for cardiovascular mortality, 17% for colorectal cancer, and 19% for advanced prostate cancer".
  6. Think about it, everywhere we look there is red meat. Nearly every fast food joint has it as a staple on their menu, restaurants advertise it heavily, and most processed food companies sell it frequently.

  8. Consumption of these marketed foods has become a staple in the American diet. Transportation makes it harder and harder to find time for a healthy meal; enter fast food.
  9. From an environmental stand point, again just with red meat, the effects are astounding. As we know, cows poop. Cow digestion and waste produces methane gas, and methane gas is terrible for the atmosphere. CO2 is one thing that cars give off, and has a half life of 27 years and burns at 5x10^8 Kelvin. Methane is 23 times more potent and dangerous for the atmosphere than CO2. It has a much shorter half life but traps 28 times more heat than CO2. This causes greater potential for harm and makes Methane one of the most harmful greenhouse gases in the world.

  11. Again, this is only red meat. If we take into account the production of methane in pigs, chickens and other livestock, the numbers are staggering Food companies are not helping the problem, mass production of foods leads to animals with unhealthy diets of foods that increase meat output, leading to problems with digestion that lead to more methane production. Methane is killing the atmosphere and leading to increases temperatures around the globe. Our society has fallen into a deep spiral that is being over looked by mass consumption and the need for more. How can we turn around the years of damage to the planet, if our roots of consumerism are so deeply rooted? Food companies keep producing more and more food, specifically meat, when really we should be moving towards more sustainable foods, and more sustainable ways to produce the things we need to eat , without harming our bodies or the environment.
