  1. In every dental clinic, one of the most performed dental procedures is the cavity preparation. It is one of the most important procedures which the dental students learn about because cavity cases are usually more frequent than any other dental issues. In fact, dental students belonging to every discipline are taught about handling cavity preparation process. Cavity preparation’s main purpose is to prepare tooth for restoration in case the tooth is cracked or is affected by conditions like dental caries.
  2. Better preparation of cavity is the key to successful restoration. Therefore, it would be worth mentioning the instruments which are required to get proper shape of the cavity before the restoration process is initiated. After the cavity is shaped according to requirement, the tooth is restored using certain materials such as ZOE, GIC, composite etc.
  3. With that said, we are now going to mention some instruments which are used in cavity preparation.
  4. Chisels
  5. Based on the shape of shank, the chisels can be divided into three types. These three shapes are Straight, Curved and Biangled. Each of these chisels is used to approach the teeth based on their location in the jaw and the surface they have. The basic purpose of chisel is to push the stroke or scrap the enamel.
  6. Enamel hatchet
  7. Sometimes, there is the need to scrap undermined enamel or to place the grooves. In this case, the instrument which is used is called enamel hatchet. This instrument is a long bar with cutting edge which can be maneuvered on the left and right side to cut enamel. The edge of this tool is curved to make an angle. The cutting edge comes after the curve.
  8. Gingival marginal trimmer
  9. This tool is very much similar to the enamel hatchet. However, the main difference is that the blade at the edge is curved a bit outside. Usually, the axis of the tool and the cutting side are parallel. This monobeveled biangled instrument has the cutting side which is at a different angle from that that of the axis.
  10. Gingival marginal trimmer is used for beveling gingival margin and axiopulpal line angle.

  11. Now, let’s talk about the excavators. There are different types from which some are mentioned below:
  12. Ordinary hatchet
  13. The instrument that has the cutting edge at the plane similar to that of long axis is called ordinary hatchet. This tool is used to prepared retentive areas of the anterior mouth, and to sharpen the angles for gold fillings.
  14. Hoe
  15. This tool has the cutting edge perpendicular to the long axis. The angle of blade is equal to or more than 12.5 degrees. This tool is used for giving shape to the internal part of cavities located at the posterior sides of the teeth.
  16. Angle former
  17. This tool is basically the Combination of GMT and chisel because it can function in both aspects. This tool is used to sharpen the line angles and to develop required shapes in the dentin.
  18. Instruments used for amalgam restoration
