The Decommissioning of USS Samuel B. Roberts (FFG 58)

On May 22, 2015, one of the U.S. Navy's last guided missile frigates ended 29 years of service, a run that included the crew's legendary fight against fire and flood after striking an Iranian mine in the Persian Gulf in 1988.

  1. It is a rare ship in today's Navy that bears the Combat Action Ribbon, as Roberts does, and perhaps even rarer that a crew holds its namesake and Navy heritage so dear. As the author of a 2006 book about the Roberts, I was invited to attend the ceremony at Naval Station Mayport, outside Jacksonville, Florida. Here are photos from the event:
