Located in the hills of Neora Valley at an altitude of 8000 ft, Rishyap is a small hamlet surrounded by dense and dark forests. The region is famous for its rare variety of flora and fauna which have remain undisturbed for decades. Thus, it’s a prime attraction for nature and wildlife lovers who will have a lovely time here.

Rishyap is famous for offering visitors a magnificent 180˚ view of Mt. Kanchenjunga and a full 360˚ view of other mountain ranges such as Rathung, Simvo, Kabroo, Narsingh, Talung, Khang-Chen-D-Zongha, Kokthang, Pandim, Mt.Kharg and Siniolchu. Famous Mountain passes like the Nathula, Jelepla, Batungla and Clola can also be viewed from here. Behind them lies the glacier ‘Khangse’ which is known as the source of the river Teesta right below the mountain peaks of Panhundri and Khanchangyao.

    Rishyap is blessed with an abundance of rare flora and fauna and the forest here supports a unique ecosystem. The luxurious forests are filled with varieties of tall growing trees such as oaks, ferns, bamboo, rhododendron and evergreen trees such as Pine, Fir, and Birch along with other bushy undergrowths making the forest less penetrable. The undisturbed virgin forest is home to several rare species of animals such as the Leopard cat, sloth bear, Red Panda, Himalayan Flying Squirrel, Musk Deer, Golden cat, clouded Leopard and Sambar. Trekkers and hikers will have a thrilling time moving through this dense forest upto the famous Neora Valley National Park. Rishyap is also known as a bird paradise as varied winged species throng this place throughout the year such as the White-browed Bush Robin and Fire-Breasted Flowerpecker.

    The place which is of great attraction in Rishyap and is a favourite with photographers of all ages is Tiffin Dara (old name: Sherpa Dara). You can drive your way up to this village to get a panoramic view of the majestic Mt. Kanchenjunga standing before you while its snow-capped surface reflecting off the varied hues of the Sun. Several resorts, hotels and cottages have come up in this region to cater to the tourists who would like to plan a trip to other interesting locations nearby such as Lava Jamgyong Kongtrul Monastery, Neora Valley Nature Interpretation Centre, and Kagyu Thekchen monastery, Changay Falls, Lolegaon and Pedong (Lepcha villages).

    To reach Rishyap you can hire a cab from Siliguri (nearest city), or from Lava (nearest village: 11 km) and from Kalimpong (nearest town: 27 km). The nearest railway station is New Jalpaiguri Railway Station.
