- When thinking of “mobile computing”, the word “mobile” is what really sticks out. This directs our minds to mobile phones. However, mobile computing is so much more than that! In the following story, you’ll find an in-depth look at what mobile computing really is, and where it’s headed in the future – in 2025 to be exact.
- What is Mobile Computing?
- Mobile computing is the usage of portable technological devices. These wireless devices allow transportation of data without having to be connected to a fixed physical link. (Rouse, 2007). A lot of these devices are handheld, which is very convenient because of the increased portability; they fit in your pocket and therefore are much easier to carry around than larger objects. They consist of similar software applications and components as in traditional desktop computers, such as processors, memory storage, and internet. They’re also capable of operating, executing, and providing services like desktops. However, they differ from desktops because they are constructed specifically for mobile architecture and allow portability. Mobile computing allows users to do what they couldn't with conventional desktops; they further expand the ways in which people can use technological devices and the internet, and where they can use it. Because of it, nobody is limited to using software systems and internet in only certain places such as home or cyber cafés.

· E-book readers
· Handheld game consoles
For years, mobile computing has been enabling users to access the web and data while being away from home. The range of where they can use it and how much of it they can use depends on their data plan and service providers; some users are able to use the internet from anywhere in the world. However, if a wireless network is not encrypted or if a user is looking to save data usage,Wi-Fi can of course be used in public places wherever it’s available. Internet sticks are also commonly used for laptops.
Mobile computing is already very established throughout the world but there’s no doubt that it’s on the rise; the use of this technology is rapidly increasing and is expected to innovate massively in the future.

- Society has always wanted a way to carry around information. Portability was key, just as our ancestors needed to carry around tools and other useful items. (Computer History Museum, 2014) Below is a link to a timeline in representing several forms of mobile computing and their releases over time.
- From 1982, we've come such a long way. As it says in the link, the first laptop costed a whopping $8,150 and was only purchased by the US government. Today, society has all the information needed at their fingertips. In 2013, NASA launched smartphone based satellites. (GCN Staff, 2013) The use of the smartphone has become so tremendous, it's hard to believe that it has even reached the skies above.
- Mobile Computing Today
- Today, there are many uses of mobile computing; different kinds of people use it for various purposes. The internet is an integral part of it. One of the most widely used features of mobile computing is social interactivity, which may also be referred to as mobile data communication; people are able to send and receive data across networks around the globe over diverse geographical regions – this is the principle of mobile computing. Mobile voice communication is also a huge part of mobile computing, which I'm sure we're all familiar with.
- Mobile computing is great for data storage, whether it's for simple or complex matters. Today, we don't need to carry a grocery list on paper and check items off; we can simply make a note of all the items on our phones and erase them as we go. Whereas more complex matters are concerned, people may need to store data for educational or business purposes. Another thing that mobile computing is very useful for is augmented reality apps, such as Google Maps, which there may be a great need for while on the road or while travelling.
- Cell phones and smartphones are a form of mobile computing which most of us are not only familiar with, but also use on a day-to-day basis. They are used for much more than just voice communication. Tablets are also very popular and similar to smartphones. Laptops, of course, are very efficient for multiple purposes, especially because they are capable of running the same software applications as desktop computers. They have additional features which desktops may not have, such as built-in webcams and microphones. One product that has recently become very popular is the e-book reader. People today don't need to carry around a bunch of books to read in their spare time; they can simply read them digitally. Bluetooth devices are also very useful, especially while driving so that the driver is able to keep their hands on the wheel.
- Future Mobile Devices
- As we have studied throughout our Slate content, we are now well acquainted with Cyborgs and our ever changing technology. Researchers and analysts have predicted that by 2025 there will be six devices per human on the planet. If this were true, it would mean that we would be expected to see 50 billion more connected devices over the next decade.
