Shoptalk 2017 embraces the rise of the machines — and Band-Aids

Shoptalk rolled through its third day in Las Vegas with some instructional soul searching by Kohl's CEO Kevin Mansell. Artificial Intelligence won the day — and that's not stopping any time soon. And the weary took to the pool and the parties. Three days down; one to go.

  2. Grant Arnott (@grantarnott) offered a nice late-show wrap up of highlights, including the biggie: If you don't have AI, or artificial intelligence, you're dead. What a way to go. But seriously AI is huge and it's been oozing out of every crevice of Shoptalk. The thing to think about when you hear "AI" is not, "Am I dead," but rather, "What does that nattily attired person at that booth mean when he or she says, "AI?" Arnott focuses on some voice search/personal assistant examples, which are pretty cool. But AI goes back decades and encompasses a lot more than Siri and her clan. AI is constantly learning. It allows businesses to scale operations to levels that humans could never reach. It is the key to semantic understanding and, in fact, to one-to-one personalization. It is not always seen and definitely not always heard, sometimes working away in the background to delight customers that don't even know what a buddy AI is to them. Arnott also brings us the fantastic news that "omnichannel" is dead. Not the concept, but the word, which is a horrible stain on the English language. Apparently what was "omnichannel" is now "distributed commerce." Hey, we'll take it.
  3. A tremendous summary and analysis of Shoptalk so far from Lindsay Slaby (@lasslaby) with an endorsement from one of the sharpest retail thinkers around. We're particularly taken by Slaby's take on the crucial role of content in driving commerce, something we've written about for some time. Slaby, however, shows how the content imperative is going mainstream. Check out this line: "In fact digital content is a critical influence on 30 to 50 percent of all sales."
  4. 1800Flowers isn't dead. It's turning to AI. We hope no one there in Las Vegas has decided to turn AI into a drinking game: Every time you hear AI take a shot. The place would be destroyed.
  5. Oh wait. The AI drinking game just might be a thing.

  7. So, what's up for Wednesday? Allow us. Bit of a light day, which we're sure is killing you given that you are probably just about ready to get the hell out of dodge. That said, we'd recommend "Next Generation Personalization," which kicks off just after your morning coffee. The session will look at how progressive retailers are using technology to leave recommendations in the dust and provide real personalization, based on data that uncovers consumers' behavior, preferences and intent. It would be the wave of the future, if it weren't the wave of right now. And personalization, of the one-to-one variety, will be a key differentiator between retailers who continue to succeed and those who see their businesses collapse.

  9. Kasey Lobaugh always brings it at these events. His take is worth losing sleep over: Retail is being disrupted, but not just in the ways that most people usually talk about. Smaller and new players that provide unique customer experiences and distinctive inventory are grabbing marketshare from the slow-moving legacy players. It's time to innovate — or at least be innovative.
  10. Kohl's is learning the lesson first hand.
  11. And while CEO Mansell is rightfully proud of Kohl's proprietary payment system, circling the digital wagons isn't the way to go. Kohl's app-based payment function has been a success, but the Retail Dive story points out that some shoppers are losing interest in Kohl's. When shoppers lose interest, they don't open your app. Retailers need to think about open systems that create excellent customer experiences wherever they are and on whatever device they chose to use. Kudos to Kohl's for working to improve the in-store environment. Retail in the 21st century is all about customer experience.
  12. OK. Just..... OK.
