  1. The Apple iPhone 5 was a major improvement over all the previous versions of Apple's iPhone. It had a much bigger screen, improved performance, a better camera and even LTE support. It truly was the next generation. But there was one improvement which wasn't quite appreciated by Apple users, the new lightning connector. That's right; this was the first time that Apple changed its 30 pin connector. They replaced it with a much smaller 8 pin connector called a lightning connector. What did this mean for all the existing accessories which only ran through the 30 pin connector? Read on to find out...

The unique 30 pin connector which was released by Apple in 2003 was the first connector which allowed users to perform multiple tasks while all others USB connectors only had charging and data capabilities. What's more, this universal dock connector made it possible for all Apple accessories to be connected to your devices with ease.

  3. But everything wasn't hunky dory with this connector. It was quite fragile and easily breakable. It could only be used one way and it was quite bulky as well. With the size of all Apple's devices getting smaller every year, it was becoming increasingly difficult to use this bulky connector.

That's why it wasn't a surprise when Apple finally made the change and introduced the new, much smaller lightning connector with the iPhone 5 and every Apple device ever since. This new connector only has 8 pins instead of 30 and can be used either way. This means that there will be no more fumbling and turning your cable around to try and connect it. This cable is 100 % digital as well. You can even use it as a video output. But even after all of this, the biggest improvement with the new lightning connector is that it's almost 80 % smaller than its predecessor. This is something which was sorely needed.

Moving on to the big question. What do you do with all your old accessories? Well first of all, if the iPhone 5 is the first Apple device you have purchased in your life, you will have to buy new accessories and since everything available nowadays is compatible with the lightning connector, you shouldn't face any problems. But if you're stuck with older accessories and are wondering whether you have to throw all of it out when you buy an iPhone 5, there is a way out for you as well.

Apple is currently offering a lightning adapter and a lightning adapter cable which you can use to connect any of your old Apple devices with the new lightning connector. There are a few accessories which aren't supported but most of them will work. There's no need to worry. So, if you are still using your iPhone 4S because you don't want to switch to the new lightning connector, at least there is no longer any reason for you to not make the switch because of compatibility issues.
