UPDATE 2:20 p.m. Hazmat situation has been cleared, evacuation lifted.
Authorities are in the process of evacuating homes and businesses within a one-third-mile radius around a commercial building where an explosion occurred Wednesday morning.
West Whiteland Police Detective Scott Pezick said shortly after noon that authorities were in the process of notifying residents and businesses about the expanded evacuation via an automated phone system.
One TV station falsely reported that all of Chester County had been evacuated. Officials immediately reconfirmed that only residents and businesses within a one-third-mile radius around a commercial building were being evacuated.
As authorities contained the situation, local news choppers were able to capture images of the fire.
Residents or business employees with no place to go were directed to the East Whiteland Fire Company at 170 Planebrook Road where the Southeastern Pennsylvania Chapter of the Red Cross also offered assistance.
