"What would you be like if you were the only person in the world? If you want to be truly happy you must be that person", Quentin Crisp. Aiming to be authentic - www.katyjon.com.
Katy Went is part of the Norfolk LGBT History Society, co-chair of the Norfolk LGBT & Disabled association, on the board of the Norfolk Equality & Diversity Council (NEDC) and was on the Norwich Pride collective in its first 3 years. She sits on a couple of Police and Hate Crime advisory panels and runs a regional Trans Discrimination Reporting group. She is active in transgender support, writing, public speaking and diversity training through www.GenderAgenda.net. She has trained public services including fire, police, council, and worked in prisons on translation issues with foreign nationals and asylum seekers. She's widely travelled particularly in Europe and the Middle East and speaks or has studied several languages.
She's very open about her gender diverse history and the intersex, trans and genderqueer path she has explored. She has done sex and body self-development workshops in the US and UK. Her past background in evangelical Christianity and theology meant an additional struggle to understand her gender and sexuality – and all before Internet research and online peer support was possible!
She was previously married to a psychiatrist and had a habit of subsequently dating therapists of all kinds! She has suffered from mental health issues including depression, suicide and chronic insomnia and jokes about her OCDs, humorous cluttering (verbal thought racing/neologism creating and colour-coded belongings) and bipolarism (BAD) but does not believe in medicalising her personality - in other words she can be hyper, manic, extrovert or withdrawn, low and even quiet - the latter, somewhat rarely!
She has studied economics, statistics, theology, archaeology, ancient (Hebrew, Arabic, Greek, Hieroglyphic, Cuneiform) and modern languages (Spanish, French, German and dabblings in Turkish, Romanian, Dutch, Italian, Portuguese, Swahili, Chinese, Japanese – mostly forgotten) – a polymath linguaphile or distracted scanner, take your pick, she's moved on already anyway!
She also runs www.BMSoftware.com a tech company that has specialised in translation software, Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) and Social Media Marketing (SMM) since 1998.
She is an active blogger and writer, spending most days researching, writing and campaigning about human rights, social, political and economic issues, diversity, mental health, gender and sexuality, books, and of course the eponymous internet meme - cats, she has 10 - no mad cat lady stereotype there then! She is in the process of writing several books and has also published and run a teach yourself course called Biblical Hebrew Made Easy (firstname.lastname@example.org). Some of her blogs include http://kjswords.blogspot.co.uk, www.bubblews.com/account/50073-katyjon, and http://transgendering.wordpress.com.
As part of her love of writing and early experience in PR, press releases and proofreading, she is also a Professional Pedant - http://www.professionalpedants.com. Her love of words extends to constantly finding and reviving old ones and inventing new ones, often accidentally through running her mouth off too fast for her syllables to keep up. Logophilia is a disease she does not want curing of, www.facebook.com/logophiliacs.
She worked as a photographer in the late 80s and has had exhibitions of photos from fashion to German Jewish Holocaust reportage.
She has been filmed for a visual anthropology Master’s degree documentary, "What Katy Did" (2012) which was shown at World Pride Film Festival, Cardiff Iris Prize Festival, Zürich Regard Bleu Festival & Norwich Cinema City
She plays guitar and other instruments and does stand up comedy and lie down sybaritism, ie, she often works from bed. She can be found shamelessly touting herself on www.facebook.com/katyjon, http://twitter.com/katyjon, http://storify.com/katyjon and www.pinterest.com/katyjon.
