  2. When entering a foreign country for the first time, one is bound to see a world of firsts and differences. New languages, new foods, different customs, etc. Having a background in textiles and merchandising, the initial shock for me was the difference in dress and style in Moscow from Lincoln, Nebraska.

  4. A key difference in Moscow style is the prevalence of designer labels. Despite the fact that city is considered one of the most expensive in the world, it's also one of the most glamorous. After a few days in the city, I learned it isn't entirely uncommon to see a woman reach into her signature Hermes Birkin bag for her Louis Vuitton wallet to pay for her 250 roubel ($8.89 US dollars) latte...all while stomping on her red Louboutin soles.
  5. This leads us to another key difference in fashion: student and street style. In Lincoln, it's a good day for fashion if you see people wearing anything other than sweatpants. But at Moscow State University, students take pride in their appearance.  Girls wear everything from well tailored blazers with high waisted harem pants, to simple shift dresses with intricately patterned tights. Heels are a daily wardrobe essential, and make me feel as if every woman I see is a budding Carrie Bradshaw. Almost every boy accompanies his rich leather shoes with perfectly fitting dark wash denim, button up shirts, and a cardigan. And these are just their daytime looks.

  10. The attention to detail and chic eye of the Moscow style-centered keeps me in awe. And although the pricey shops kept my roubels in my wallet (after all, I am a frugal fashionista at heart), the city implanted a swirl of style inspiration.  I can't wait to head home with these styles in mind after having experienced a major European fashion hub! American style and the Midwest could take a hint or twenty from the stylish streets of Moscow. Eat your heart out, Lincoln.
