Yesterday I cried a lot during the morning hours because Graduation to me wasn't just about receiving a piece of paper that would quality me to work in the professional field but a huge milestone! Graduation was a declaration that I conquered homelessness and poverty during my final year of college. It also exemplified breaking the stigma of being a foster youth since the age of 7. Gaining wisdom and strength to let go of those who couldn't be a positive asset to my life. Learning that failing IS OKAY as long as you try again and become stronger from that experience. Appreciating and loving those who never left my side. Cherishing those who entered my life during my time of need. Graduation is a symbol that despite continuous personal tragedy, success and fulfillment is still possible! These 7 years, have taught so much about life & although at times painful, every lesson learned, ultimately led me to this! So here are some choice weirdos. Mark and Nathan (two dudes in either end) knocked on my office door at like 9pm. I had no idea who either of them were. "Could we get feedback on this mural we're doing as a memorial for the design student from Long Beach killed in the terrorist attack in France?" Absolutely. Since then both those weirdos have been willing to meet up for the strangers things. Hey guys, want to build tables? Meet me in the art building at 10pm on a Saturday! Hey guys want to go to dtla. Or san fransisco? Or Portland? I've put literally thousands of miles and countless late nights with these dudes. Still think the mural needed more drips. Michaels the dude in the midddle. He came to my office fresh out the architecture program looking to switch to graphic design. Didn't want to take art 155 because architect logic. But dude was solid af. I went to bat for him, so he wouldn't have to take it. I lost. He had to take it. From me. I'm glad. Many late nights outside building 13 with him talking about life, design, whatever. I hate smoking, but I didn't even mind it with Michael because he's so damn pleasant to be around. These dudes are going places and I'll miss them dearly.
These three jerks were some of my very first students I ever had at cal poly when they were freshmen. Which means I guess I've been here for a minute. Lauren is amazing. Doesn't even mind that I kick her. Dog is mean but gorgeous. Just awesome to be around. Michael collects freaking muscle cars. He's the first one to weld metal for me in a 2d design class. There was no need for that. Hannah's wearing green because she has -legit- the highest gpa in the entire college. All three of these jerks went to Portland with me and none of them died. (Minus Hannah, rip, but she seems much better now). Hannah can legit design, act, speak, and sing like an opera singer, in class, deafeningly loudly, about urine. Im not even joking. Best dudes.
