Photojournalists are important

As the soon-to-be wife of a photography nut (who sometimes shoots for the paper), and friend of many photojournalists, the Chicago Sun-Times' decision to layoff its photographers has dominated my social media feeds.

  1. The evidence that real photographers matter was blatantly clear this week when the Chicago Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup. Several of my friends shared this link, which compares the covers of the Sun-Times and the Tribune two days after the win. It appears they also don't have any good designers or access to wire photos, because the terrible photography aside, that's an awfully drab, depressing cover for what should be an exciting event. People save newspapers after things like Stanley Cup victories. No one will save the Sun-Times cover except for newspaper design professors who need a "what not to do" example.
