@daily egyptian alums rally to #savetheDE @SIUC

Former and current college newspaper staffers hit social media airwaves to gather support for the Daily Egyptian, the nearly 100-year-old daily newspaper at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale after news broke that the SIU Board of Trustees would not consider a $9 per-semester student fee.

  2. Within hours after the Daily Egyptian reported the board's refusal late Wednesday, more than a thousand fans joined a Facebook page set up to share information and try to get the trustees to reconsider at a meeting on Thursday
  3. Alumni working newsrooms around the country showed up on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. Paul Pabst, executive produce of The Dan Patrick show, went on air Thursday morning with a sign.

Pabst, who also teaches at Sacred Heart, and Jackie Spinner, a former Washington Post staff writer who now teaches journalist at Columbia College Chicago, were the first news inductees in to the Daily Egyptian's Hall of Fame last year. Spinner asked alums to tweet pictures of their press IDs and credentials. Dozens did.
