- Great to be back in Boston. I spent several years in the area and graduated from Brookline High School in 1982! Back then, I was an insecure teenager who had just fled the Iranian revolution. My first name was Iran and I quickly dropped it and registered at Brookline High using my middle name Davar. They say that life is a paradox between fear and hope and in the past thirty five, I have refused to allow fear to win. Today as we pray for Paris we must do the same -- refuse to allow fear to win and remain strong and determined in our work and in our values and identities.
- In the past year, I have followed Deray McKessen on Twitter and met up with him in Baltimore during the protests following the death of Freddie Gray. Deray has consistently used his platform to engage in critical dialogue and I couldn’t be more honored to be speaking at this summit along with him. Deray has said that for many, the world is a place where we’re not supposed to make noise, where we’re asked to hide who we are and be silent about the injustices we face. He has says, “Let’s use our platforms to render visible the invisible to help us see the beautiful complexity in all our identity.” And that’s really what I talked about at Harvard -- why we need to find new storytelling platforms that are inclusive and give voice to the many challenges we face.
