- At 1pm Wednesday 27 April the Guardian announced it is to wind down its Guardian Local project, including one of three blogs - Guardian Cardiff. As the appointed beatblogger for Cardiff, I was keen to share this news with the community I have been working with over the last year - and was overwhelmed by the response. Here I've collated some tweets, comments and blogposts so I can always look back on what the project achieved. Head over to the Inside Guardian blogpost to add your thoughts or questions about the decision.
- Initial shock....
- A nice comment from PeterCox on the blog:There is a direct correlation between Hannah's arrival in Cardiff anda change by all the local media (Media Wales and BBC) to events in Cardiff. She has created competition where there was none, just a money-driven lazy kind of routineness mostly. That Hannah has been able to engage with other professional in joint ventures (such as the social media workshops) is a credit to her talents and personality. For the first time since I have lived here (getting on for 20 years) we now how local media and countless new media sites that are confronting real issues in the capital city. I personally don't doubt that this has been largely the Guardian's doing (a catalyst only maybe, but that's an essential to a chemical reaction).
- Another comment from Lee Smith on the blog:I feel the Guardian Cardiff website has made a REAL impact on the society around Cardiff with it and its content creating a buzz around the city.
- Phoenixlily responded:Absolutely completely 100% agree with Peter Cox about the Cardiff site - it has galvinised the city! It has brought different communities together as they've found a local source of objective alternative news that is more representative than the other local media outlets (who have all upped their game since Hannah has been here).
- Talk of consolatory beers, cocktails, and a leaving party being organised...
- Guardian Edinburgh beatblogger Mike MacLoed states his plans outright. Lots of people asking me what my next plans are - afraid I'm not going to comment on this just yet, but let's just say I'm open to suggestions (see my website here and LinkedIn profile here).
- Another poingnant comment on the blogpost from stlemur:Please keep the Cardiff local and all the others going. The websites -- far more than "blogs" -- have been hugely useful in helping re-build community campaigns and helping people engage with local people in an age of growing generification and de-localisation of news.
End of Guardian Cardiff - your messages
I wanted to collate some of the messages, tweets and blogposts which have come in since the announcement from the Guardian that it is to close its Local project.
