What is a Recipe? Day 1

A Virtual Conversation

  1. On Day 1, three themes developed in our Virtual Conversation on 'What is a Recipe?': how recipes are a slippery concept, their sensory and experiential nature, and their usefulness for education.
  2. Over at The Recipes Project blog, a theme that has come up repeatedly is: what is a recipe? For example, we come across recipes in all sorts of areas besides cookery, such as medicine, science, magic, and artisanal activities. We're all familiar with what a basic sort of recipe looks like, with a title, list of ingredients and their measurements, and instructions for preparation. But if we take this format, how widely can it be applied? Can it, for example, apply to craft instrutions, exercise regimens, or pilgrimage manuals? And how much information needs to be in a recipe? Can it just be a list of ingredients? What role does implied knowledge play?
  3. The question 'What is a Recipe?' scratches the surface of a topic that can lead in many intriguing directions!
  4. So, we decided to host a series of Virtual Conversations, and hung out our sign in the hopes that people would come.
  5. And everyone and their dog started to think about: 'What is a Recipe?'
  6. As we finalised the programme, we started to get very excited with the upcoming presentations: from livestreamed participatory cooking to month-long potato growing experiments, to videos on hard tack treats from the First World War. People started to get ready to join in!
  7. Live on Facebook tomorrow morning, co-founder Marissa Nicosia will be talking about Cooking in the Archives & this recipe for Portugal Eggs from @kislakcenter @upennlib MS Codex 785. (Link to @recipesproject livestream in profile. Friday 6/2, 8:30am) #berks2017 #recipesproject #recipesconf

  8. And then it was Day 1!
  9. Elaine Leong, a founding co-editor of The Recipes Project, kicked things off, drawing attention to the prevalence of potatoes in our programme.
  10. But potatoes are not the only food.
