GPS students take over Open Data Science Conference

The UC San Diego School of Global Policy and Strategy (GPS) shipped a handful of students up to Santa Clara, Calif., from Nov. 4-6, 2016, for the world's largest applied data science conference. We gave two full reins on the School's Twitter and Instagram accounts to chronicle their experience.

  1. Meet Anton Prokopyev, a 2017 MIA candidate at the School...
  2. ...and Dana Kozhakhmetova, 2018 MIA candidate.
  3. On day one of the Open Data Science Conference (ODSC), Prokopyev and Kozhakhmetova waste no time on settling into trainings on the newest trends and insights from some of the biggest names in data science. In addition to a career fair, ODSC comprised more than 100 talks, hands-on workshops and tutorials.

  6. Eventually, Prokopyev draws parallels between Professor Craig McIntosh's quantitative methods course and his lessons on fixed effects...
  7. ...and lessons learned from Affiliate Professor Molly Roberts.
  8. Still, there's no shortage of new skills to be gained at ODSC...
  9. ...and contacts to be made, such as representatives of one of GPS's top employers, Booz Allen Hamilton.

  11. Kirk Borne, principal data scientist at Booz Allen, even gave an online shoutout to Prokopyev at the conference.
  12. Meanwhile, Kozhakhmetova pays a visit to the career fair at the conference, connecting with tech companies such as Uber...
  13. ... and then ventures into other trainings on up-and-coming data science topics, tools and languages.
