I discussed the platform Yelp, in my A2 Assignment on Social Media's Impact on the Restaurant Industry. Yelp is a popular online review site, intended for local restaurant users. Google tried to purchase Yelp in 2009, but failed to reach an agreement (Wiki, 2014). On Yelp, restaurant owners can ‘claim’ their businesses and manage the presence of their business.
I reviewed Five Corners Bistro in White Rock, for my A2 Assignment. The restaurant owner, Rice Honeywell, has claimed his business on Yelp and he has added photos, business hours, and provided a link to the company website. He has also responded to customer reviews, both positive and negative. Overall, he is making this into a good social media marketing tool for his business.
Diners can use Yelp to find local restaurants, and leave reviews of the business and the food etc. and also share to facebook and twitter easily. If you are contemplating going to the particular restaurant, you can look at the review made and check out the reviewers comments and posts on other restaurants as well. You can also follow the reviewer and give them compliments on their review and check off whether the review was useful, funny or cool. You can share the review, make a compliment, send the reviewer a message and follow them.
- Yelp is also available as a mobile app for iOS and Android. This YouTube Video will give you more information about the app, if you want more... but basically, Yelp enables users to look up restaurants in the area and leave a review with a star rating system from 1 to 5.
- Yelp is a useful app for anyone contemplating a dinner spot and needing useful information before going out. Give it a try the next time you head out for food!
