  3. I was inspired by my classmates as our two service teams shared experiences and reflected on the significance of the service we completed while in New York City for our service-learning class! Here we are preparing cole slaw for a meal that we hosted for members of a women's shelter. Poverty and homelessness are complex issues but can be fixed! -Michelle Mages, P3 #draketakesNYC #donatecashnottrash

  4. Today we are in San Cristobal located in the Galápagos Islands! As part of our service-learning  project, our goal today was to plant 60 miconia seedlings and we surpassed our goal by planting 110! We also helped to remove invasive guava and blackberries that outcompete the miconia. Our other service project while in San Cristobal is to help assist in rebuilding a tortoise sanctuary along with having the chance to interact and feed them! -Ethan Middleton

  8. Hi! My name is Joy Gachii and I’m a senior Marketing major. Last week, we had the amazing opportunity to travel to New York for the Explorations of Urban Poverty J-term course. While we mainly focused on service learning, we also got the opportunity to explore the Big Apple! Here, our group was super excited to see NYC in all its glory from the observation deck at the Top of the Rock (Rockefeller).

  9. Did you know that Ecuador gets its name from the Spanish word for equator? Ecuador is home to roughly 16 million people and is situated on…you guessed it, the equator! Located on the west coast of South America, the weather varies significantly due to differences in altitude and proximity to the equator. Here I am at Ciudad Mitad del Mundo, or the “Middle of the World” located just outside Quito, the capital of Ecuador. The equator is actually 5 kilometers wide and due to the Earth’s rotation the center can move by up to 30 feet in a single year. For more information on Ecuador stay tuned as I head to the Galapagos and visit the Islands that were once explored by the famous Charles Darwin!

  12. ¡Hola y bienvenidos a Ecuador! My name is Ethan Middleton (@middleton.ethan) and I am currently a P3 PharmD/MBA student. This J-term I will be taking you on a tour of Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands! The first week, students will be staying with host parents and partaking in various activities throughout the week. Above is a picture of Rucu Pichincha, an active volcano that is 15,696 ft tall. As you can see in the photo, clouds are forming atop mountains. This is due to winds that carry moisture up the mountain where the altitude is high and the air cooler. The cool air then causes the vapor to condense and form clouds allowing us to get amazing photos such as the one above. Throughout this trip, I will be studying environmental and social issues and the importance they play in a developing country such as Ecuador. Stay tuned for more to come! ¡Chao!

  13. Hi Bulldogs! My name is Samantha Ohlson (@samanthaohlson) , and I'm a junior Music and News double major. Currently I am in Egypt with 18 other Bulldogs taking Islam in the 21st Century for J-Term. Today we went to see the Great Pyramids of Giza. This photo was taken after we climbed into the burial chamber in the very center of center of the pyramid. How cool is it that we actually sat on the pyramid?

Editor's note: through Jan. 22 we will be sharing photos from different J-Term courses.
