Did you know that Ecuador gets its name from the Spanish word for equator? Ecuador is home to roughly 16 million people and is situated on…you guessed it, the equator! Located on the west coast of South America, the weather varies significantly due to differences in altitude and proximity to the equator. Here I am at Ciudad Mitad del Mundo, or the “Middle of the World” located just outside Quito, the capital of Ecuador. The equator is actually 5 kilometers wide and due to the Earth’s rotation the center can move by up to 30 feet in a single year. For more information on Ecuador stay tuned as I head to the Galapagos and visit the Islands that were once explored by the famous Charles Darwin!
