Shaping economic transformation in Tanzania #TZgrowth

Tanzania has had strong economic growth, but there is concern about its longevity. On 23 February 2015, DEGRP & REPOA brought together key researchers & policy-makers, including the Governor of the Bank of Tanzania, to explore challenges & solutions for economic transformation.


  1. The meeting began with opening remarks from Professor Sam Wangwe (Executive Director of REPOA) on the importance of economic transformation for Tanzanian growth.

  2. Dr Dirk Willem te Velde (ODI Senior Research Fellow and DEGRP Research Lead) introduced the DFID-ESRC Growth Research Programme (DEGRP) and spoke about the importance of economic transformation.

  4. The keynote address was delivered by Professor Benno Ndulu, Governor of the Central Bank of Tanzania, who discussed recent significant changes to the country’s economy.

  5. MP for Kigoma North & Chairman of the Parliamentary Public Accounts Committee (PAC), Zitto Kabwe and Tanzanian Minister of Tourism, Lazaro Nyalandu also joined the conversation:
  6. Professor Ndulu's speech was popular among local and regional journalists.
  7. The first session of the day focused on the role of agriculture in promoting economic transformation in Tanzania.

  8. Speakers included Dr Steve Wiggins (ODI Research Fellow & DEGRP Agricultural Lead); Dr Julius Gatune Kariuki (from the African Centre for Economic Transformation); and Dr Geoffrey Karenga (from the Southern Agricultural Corridor of Tanzania - SAGCOT)
