  1. Nov 7, 2017 4:30 AM EST: From The Associated Press:

President Donald Trump says stricter gun control measures might have led to additional casualties during a mass shooting at a south Texas church.

Trump says at a news conference in South Korea that, "If you did what you're suggesting, there would have been no difference three days ago and you might not have had that very brave person who happens to have a gun or a rifle in his trunk."

He'd been asked whether he would support "extreme vetting" for gun purchases like he's called for for people entering the country.

Trump says if that Good Samaritan didn't have a gun, "instead of having 26 dead, you would have had hundreds more dead."

Authorities say Devin Patrick Kelley fired at least 450 rounds of ammunition at worshippers in Sunday's attack at the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs. The dead ranged in age from 18 months to 77 years old.

  2. Nov 6, 2017 10:55 PM EST: Gunman sent threatening messages to mother-in-law.
  3. The gunman who killed 26 people at a small-town Texas church had a history of domestic violence and sent threatening text messages to his mother-in-law, a member of First Baptist, before the attack in which he fired at least 450 rounds at helpless worshippers, authorities said Monday.

Kelley’s mother-in-law sometimes attended services there, but the sheriff said she was not at church on Sunday.

  5. Nov 6, 2017 7:09 PM EST: Official: Devin Patrick Kelley had one self inflicted gun shot wound to the head.
  6. Nov 6, 2017 6:33 PM EST: Trump administration officials say the Air Force didn’t submit the accused Texas church shooter’s criminal history to the FBI, as required by Pentagon rules.
  7. Under Pentagon rules, information about convictions of military personnel in crimes like assault should be submitted to the FBI’s Criminal Justice Investigation Services Division.

Kelley was convicted of assault in an Air Force court martial in 2012 and given a bad conduct discharge in 2014.
  8. Nov. 6, 2017 - 3:20 p.m.: Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, blamed the media for politicizing Sunday's deadly mass shooting at a Texas church, declining to speak about possible gun control measures in the wake of the attack that killed 26 people.
  9. "Evil is evil is evil," Cruz said, pointing to last week's terror attack in New York City in which eight people were killed by a man who struck them with a rented truck.
  10. "We don't need politics right now," Cruz said. "Evil will always tragically be with us but also good."
  11. Nov. 6, 2017 - 3:14 p.m. EST: Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, said that Texans will carry on in the wake of Sunday's mass shooting at a Baptist church in Texas by leaning on one another as the world mourns with them.
  12. "In the face of unspeakable evil, we're seeing Texas coming together," Cruz said. "We're seeing Texans helping Texans, leaning on each other. ... You're not alone. You're being lifted up by the prayers of literally millions of Texans, millions of people across the country, millions of people across the planet.
  13. "We will come through it and we will come through it leaning on each other."
  14. Nov. 6, 2017 - 3:07 p.m. EST: Vice President Mike Pence said he and his wife, Karen, will travel to Sutherland Springs on Wednesday in the wake of a mass shooting that left 26 people dead at a Baptist church Sunday.
  15. "We are with you Texas," Pence wrote on Twitter.
  16. Nov. 6, 2017 - 2:56 p.m.: The New York Times reported Monday that the gunman who killed 26 churchgoers in Texas on Sunday and injured 20 others, identified by authorities as 26-year-old Devin Patrick Kelley, was previously convicted of assaulting his wife and breaking his infant stepson's skull.
  17. The newspaper reported that among Kelley's punishments, he received a bad conduct discharge from the military and not a dishonorable discharge, which would have barred him from buying firearms.
  18. Kelley was stationed at Holloman Air Force Base in New Mexico in 2012. Don Christensen, a retired colonel who was chief prosecutor for the U.S. Air Force, told the Times that Kelley pleaded guilty to intentionally injuring his wife and stepson.
  19. According to the Times, Kelley was sentenced to "confinement and reduction to the lowest possible rank. ... It is unclear whether his conviction would have barred him from purchasing a gun."
