#CodeforOakland 2012

On July 21st Code For Oakland held their second annual citywide hackathon. The theme for this year is "Building the Civic Web" and projects were focused primarily on increasing civic participation focusing on Open Data and economic development to urban foraging. http://codeforoakland.org

  2. The event took place at Kaiser Center and featured speakers and presentations as well as the hackathon.
  3. With over 200 registered attendees, the event brought together Oakland's technology community with local activists, community leaders and government officials.

  5. Steve Spiker, Research and Technology Director for Urban Strategy Council MC'd the event and began with short introductions by everyone in the room.
  6. Jen Pahlka, founder of Code for America, gave the opening keynote presentation, making the connection between civic engagement and technology and encouraging the rise of "citizen citizens" community members who are using technology to actively engage their communities and government leaders.
