- After a couple of years of take shots at doing this, and so many emails that I am truly humbly (and a bit embarrassed), I'm coming back to give it another effort. Some of you may know that I've tried a variety of ways of working a version of this, and it turns out that Storify is the easiest for me to actually get done, even if it doesn't have all the features I would like. So here goes.Let's see what's going on... that I find interesting.
TNT Leaves 'Mob City' to Sleep With the Fishesthe Frank Darabont-directed mini-series based on John Buntin's book L.A. Noir, was not a tremendous hit when it aired on TNT last fall. There were high hopes for the show, but it left critics and audiences only marginally impressed, and notched middling ratings despite an expensive ad campaign.- Unfortunately, this one couldn't get a hold of audiences. It deserved more attention, although I'm not even sure it deserved another season. It seemed like no one cared if it continued right from the beginning. Frankly, the very strange air schedule probably led to the lack of interest.
Fox's 'Gotham' Books Donal Logue as Harvey BullockFox's Batman prequel is rounding out its ranks, booking Sons of Anarchy alum Donal Logue to play a pivotal role in Gotham. Logue has boarded the Batman origin story as detective Harvey Bullock, the partner to Ben McKenzie's rookie detective James Gordon, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.- The Gotham info keeps coming, and now there's finally some good news. I suppose that depends on how you feel about some of the other news. Nothing makes me happier than Donal Logue getting work though, and the news comes at a good time. Logue is about to hit your screens with the second season of Vikings as well, and with Copper bizarrely cancelled, I like to see him filling the void in a hurry.
- 'Star Wars: The Clone Wars' makes the Force a Netflix exclusiveThirteen new episodes of "The Clone Wars" will premiere on Netflix on March 7. The five earlier seasons, which previously aired on Time Warner Inc's Cartoon Network, also will be available on Netflix at that time, along with a feature film of the same name.
- It's a bit of an odd time, with tons of TV news coming through right on the heels of a lot of the late-year shows about to hit, and now we get hit with news from other angles as well. I actually liked what I saw of this show, and I'm glad the final season will get a chance to be seen.
FOX Orders Will Forte's 'Last Man on Earth' to SeriesBack in October, FOX won a multi-network bidding war for the pilot rights to the Will Forte-penned apocalyptic comedy Last Man on Earth . Network executives must have really liked the concept, as they have now chosen to bypass the pilot process altogether and order a full first season.- This one is actually fun news. The most important part being that the show is just full-on go. Someone thinks this is the greatest idea ever, and I don't think it's me. Of course, it could just be that someone thinks people will watch it, and the "goodness" may not be in the equation at all.
'Office's' Oscar Nunez Joins USA Courtroom Comedy 'Benched'The actor joins Eliza Coupe and Jay Harrington on the series NBC's "Office's" Oscar Nuñez is sticking around NBCUniversal. Nuñez will star on NBC's cable sister USA Network's new comedy series, "Benched," in a series regular role. He will play a public defender and colleague to Eliza Coupe's Nina on the single-camera comedy series.- Office fans have something to cheer about (though I don't know why Cosby is in that image), as another member of the crew gets something going. It's potentially even better news than most, because USA is usually pretty good to their shows.
The CW renews FIVE dramasThe CW has renewed five of its dramas for next season. Ready? The Vampire Diaries. Supernatural. The Originals. And... Explained CW president Mark Pedowitz: "This season we've had great success with our new hit series The Originals paired with Supernatural, giving us our best Tuesday nights in years.- In similar news, CW fans can breathe a sigh of relief as their favorites have been renewed. The news is actually more interesting than it might seem, with the network not only avoiding suspense, but also giving a chance for shows to jump in early.
- If you haven't caught this already, make sure you click through above. This has already taken off though, and if you haven't already seen it, it's hard to imagine how you put together the technical savvy to read this. Still, it's hilarious. Watch it again.
Fox cancels 'X Factor'The X Factor has been crossed off Fox's schedule. The network is canceling the singing-competition series after three seasons of declining ratings. The news comes the same day judge and executive producer Simon Cowell announced he would return to the UK version of the show.- In already old news, X-Factor isn't coming back. On the other hand, despite the fact that the vast majority of outlets report the show as having been axed, it seems to be something more along the lines of just deciding not to make it anymore. Figure out that distinction.I have to say, I'm glad of the move. While Simon is certainly an icon, and will be around for the U.K. version, the version on FOX wasn't going anywhere. Why? The other judges.
'Game of Thrones' Star to Succeed Statham in 'Transporter' Reboot (EXCLUSIVE)Ed Skrein ("Game of Thrones") is to succeed Jason Statham in the reboot of EuropaCorp's " Transporter " franchise. British thesp Skrein previously starred in Ben Drew's critically acclaimed crime drama "Ill Manors."- In "Do I really care?" news, the world is officially out of ideas... again, and the Transporter series is getting a reboot. Why, you ask? Apparently, you'll go see it. To be fair, the first one wasn't bad. Still, is this all we have?
Pitch Perfect 2 Confirms Anna Kendrick and Rebel WilsonUniversal Pictures has confirmed that actresses Anna Kendrick and Rebel Wilson are returning as Becca and Fat Amy in the musical comedy sequel Pitch Perfect 2. It still isn't known if any of the other Pitch Perfect stars, such as Skylar Astin, Ben Platt, Brittany Snow, Anna Camp or Alexis Knapp will be coming back.- No, because we have a sequel to work with. This one actually is good news, although I'm very nervous where the Rebel Wilson train is headed. Super Fun Night is still hanging on, along with some other less than stellar new efforts on ABC, and I wonder if it isn't just ABC hanging onto things in some misguided effort to prove that they don't cancel everything after two or three episodes. The ratings aren't that strong. At any rate, this one is certainly good news.
AMC Greenlights Kiss's Arena Football Team Reality ShowPaul Stanley and Gene Simmons will make cameos, though likely sans pads AMC has greenlit a reality series focusing on the inaugural season of the L.A. Kiss arena football league team. The untitled show will follow the players and coaches attempting to turn Los Angeles' only professional football team into a winner.- And, because I like the ebb and flow of craziness, AMC is giving you the reality show you never knew you wanted (and I'm guessing that you actually don't), which probably isn't going to end up nearly the wack-venture you expect, because Gene Simmons isn't actually the subject.
'Happy Endings' Creator's Roommates Comedy Gets Pilot Order at CBSHappy Endings' David Caspe is having a good pilot season. The creator of the late ABC comedy has just landed his second pilot order of the season, with CBS picking up multicamera Cuz-Bros, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. Caspe will co-write Cuz-Bros with Community's Erik Sommers, who also was a co-EP and writer on Happy Endings.- In other TV news, but this time of the "what the hell is going on here?" variety, David Caspe is launching two pilots for next year. Now, take a real look at this info for a second. Caspe has to his credit That's My Boy, Happy Endings, and nothing else. That's My Boy, a movie that is 20% fresh at Rottentomatoes.com, and doesn't deserve to be that high, isn't selling anyone on anything. In fact, your only move there is to distance yourself from it as much as humanly possible. That means you've really only got Happy Endings, which was a great show, with vocal fans. But, the final result here is that Happy Endings somehow isn't enough to stay on the air itself, but it's enough to get you two pilot orders. Shazam.
