- Knuckles was born in the Bronx in 1955. He became a DJ in the early 1970s with his friend Larry Levan. Eventually, he took over for Levan as the DJ at New York's Continental Baths. Then, starting in 1977, he was a regular DJ at the Warehouse in Chicago. The music he played there was shortened to "house", which became its own genre. In 1983, he moved to his own club, the Power Plant.
