  3. When Lauren recited the final lines, "...come celebrate/with me that everyday/something has tried to kill me/and has failed," a collective exhale came from the standing-room-only crowd.
  4. Lauren was among the poets reading their poems last night from the anthology, Resisting Arrest: Poems to Strech the Sky.
  5. The line up - which included anthology editor Tony Medina, Abdul Ali, Derrick Weston Brown, Sarah Browning and Esther Iverem - gave an awesome reading at The Potter's House.
  6. Proceeds from anthology sells will go to the Whitney M. Young Social Scholarship to help deserving high school seniors. The crowd got background on the scholarship before Dr. Tony Medina laid out the order of readers.
  7. The issues addressed ranged from police killings, to the Standing Rock protest against the North Dakota Pipeline, to President-elect Donald Trump.
  8. During his set, Abdul Ali, who kicked off the reading, shared poems inspired his students and his visit back to his former home in D.C. (Abdul now lives in Baltimore.)
  9. Sarah Browning and Venus Thrash read poems on love and hope.
  10. The event culminated with the open mic, kicked off by Taylor Johnson. They read their poem, "This Is How You Enter the Poem."
