#FakeDWPstories: UK Department for Work and Pensions fakes claimant stories

The Department for Work and Pensions has admitted that it used fake quotes from fictional claimants to help advertise new sanctions.

  1. Twitter responded to the department's admission with their own fictional tales of beneficial benefit cuts, using #FakeDWPStories.
  2. Many of the #FakeDWPStories featured characters from film and television thanking the DWP.
  3. DWS responded to the trending hashtag by removing the stories and asserting they had just been intended to be illustrative.
  4. The DWP's programme of benefit sanctions has been the subject of mounting criticism. Critics describe the department's policy as "sanction now, investigate later." Some have collected stories of sanctions for trivial reasons as well as sanctions that have caused poverty and hunger for the claimant.
