Firstly we catch up with Jaime and Brienne, who have come to be with a more hospitable crowd of northerners than before. So cordial that Jaime is taken to a doctor. This wizened old healer advocates that age old remedy of stripping the wound of its rotting flesh, before dousing it in boiling wine. Lots of screaming follows.
Jaime, suffering mild delirium from his septic stump, recounts to Brienne the story of how his got his nickname, which he’s apparently not fond of. Turns out the Mad King, to whom Jaime served, was a pyromaniac, intent on burning King’s Landing and its inhabitants. Jaime was deemed an oath breaker, and a Kingslayer, for killing the King.
Perhaps it’s just me, but there’s a distinct feeling of tension between Brienne and Jaime, especially after everything the two have been through together. However, I can’t decide if it’s a mutual respect, a platonic friendship or something more…
Regarding another romance that’s been a while coming, things actually do heat up between Ygritte and Jon Snow. The two, in the midst of the freezing landscape, manage to sneak off, find a warm, well-lit cave and get it on. I’m not begrudging the sex scene for the sake of it, but it’s evidence that the plotline is moving at a glacial pace up beyond the Wall. Where are these wildings we were meant to be so terrified of?
