To fluoridate or not to fluoridate

With a number of Queensland councils removing fluoride from their drinking water, there's a growing debate in some circles about whether or not we should have fluoridated water.

  1. In December 2012, we reported that Bundaberg Regional Council in Queensland had made the decision to refuse water fluoridation.
  2. This move has been followed by others, strengthening the resolve of anti-fluoride campaigners but dismaying health authorities who reinforce the dental benefits of the water treatment, as Matt Wordsworth reports:
  3. This story prompted much debate and discussion over the issues of whether to fluoridate our drinking water:
  4. I was born and grew up in Sydney with Fluoride in water, no ill health or side effects, now living in Qld, and in my 50's, my dentist asks "You lived in Sydney didn't you" I ask why, and he says I have the healthiest and strongest teeth he has seen in quite some time. My mum is 85 and still has all her own teeth.
  5. No, absolutely not. No fluoride should be added to our water. Governments should not be making decisions like this, this should be every individuals choice.
  6. If the latest science and health experts recommend and endorse fluoride in the water as a public health benefit, then there is only one rational choice in my view. Following link of NHMRC systematic review from 2007 may be useful for those that think fluoride is not beneficial:  http://www.nhmrc.gov.au/_files_nhmrc/publications/attachments/eh41_1.pdf
  7. Fluoridation is forced mass medication - if fluoride chemicals are added to water with the intent of people ingesting fluoride, absorbing through the gut to travel around the body and only affect the teeth positively ( it also affects teeth adversely by causing dental fluorosis ) with the intent of reducing tooth decay, than it is being added for a therapeutic effect - yet dentist deny it is a medication. It is too dangerous to fluoridation promoters to admite it is a medication - because then it breaches 2 core principles of medication (1) informed consent ( 2) control over dose - you cannot control how much water people drink.
  8. Water fluoridation is approved by WHO and many other health organisations world wide and research overwhelmingly backs its safety and efficacy. That is good enough for me.
  9. WHO (World Health Organization) confirms Fluoride is a low-dose Endocrine Disruptor but fails to mention in "Summary for decision makers" so be sure to download the full report  http://www.who.int/ceh/publications/endocrine/en/index.html
  10. Of course fluoride in high doses is toxic as is Vit A, we are talking about scientific evidence, that in small doses fluoride overwhelmingly reduces the rate of caries. My kids have benefited greatly by fluoride in tap water (SA) not a filling in their head. Oral hygiene is also important but the influence of fluoride on the anatomy and strength of enamel is paramount. The most responsible public health initiative that is cost effective and is endorsed by WHO
  11. The science was done over 50 years ago. Fluoride causes a 5% increase in the cancer mortality rate at 1ppm (This is the current ratio in Australia). This was a 28 year study conducted by Dr Burk, formally of the NCI  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ClqK7XvfLg0 . So the argument for fluoride is null and void. No amount of good teeth are going to bring back all those dead people
  12. So, name one reputable professional medical, dental or scientific organisation that is opposed to fluoridation of water! The Centre for Disease Control, the US Surgeon general, the AMA and the Australian Dental Association all support it, so who doesn't? Oddly enough, no anti-fluoride supporter can ever provide that list!!!
  13. The following reputable scientific bodies call for an end to Fluoridation: Union of United States Environmental Protection Agency Scientists (over 10,000 scientists), British Society of Soil Scientists, Fluoride Action Network (over 4,000 scientists including 14 Nobel Prize winners), the scientific advisory public servants in the countries that have banned or rejected fluoridation (95% of the World population are not fluoridated, including 97% of Europe).
  14. Simple fact to ponder - my retired partner grew up without fluoride and is currently costing the tax payer 1000s of dollars in medicare funded dental work, including 2 dentures. I grew up with fluoride and have a mouth full of relatively healthy teeth. The argument of forced medication is the same for vaccines. Those who refuse vaccines for no good medical reason are potentially contributing to childhood suffering. the choice has to go with the evidence.
