PolicyLink Equity Summit #Equity15 #CT

On October 27, 2015 a delegation of roughly 60 folks - including W.C.G. Memorial Fund grantees, partners and staff - arrived in L.A. to attend the Equity Summit 2015. The following tweets from our group, and new friends we made from CT, capture some of our experience...

  1. The Pre-Summit Equity Institute and Mobile Workshops were held on Tuesday.
  2. The conference began with an opening blessing and welcome from Virginia Carmelo, Tribal Elder, Gabrielino/Tongva Nation. Then the lights dimmed and the room was ignited as we watched the opening video featuring "Our Moment" by Mayda del Valle.
  3. Angela Glover Blackwell, founder and president of PolicyLink, was up next. She began by sharing PolicyLink's inspiring "Equity Manifesto."
  4. The Place, Race and Economy: Winning on Equity in the 21st Century panel followed. Raj Chetty, Bloomberg Professor of Economics, Harvard University, began with a presentation full of data debunking the "American Dream."
  5. We broke up to attend workshop sessions, including: Toxic Inequality: Challenges and Solutions for the Racial Wealth Gap and Transforming Low-Wage Work into Quality Jobs.
  6. After lunch, folks attended more sessions, such as: Funders Boost Organizing and Advocacy to Deliver Policy Wins and Transforming School Discipline and Boosting Achievement.
