Morning Shift: A call for different voices

We may be surrounded by media, but does it broaden our perspective? We'll talk about the need for diversity with writer and media expert Michele Weldon. Also, religion journalist, Judy Valente, attempts to bring us some inner peace, and musician Alex Cuba performs.

  1. The push for more diversity in media - Getting enough diversity in your media diet? What voices are missing, or being drowned out? We explore ongoing efforts to add fresh perspectives to media with author, journalist, and media consultant. Michele Weldon.

  3. "Eat This!: Gluten-Free Foods" - An estimated 18 million Americans are believed be sensitive to gluten — a protein found in wheat, barley, and rye —  and nearly 3 million Americans suffer from full blown celiac disease, which makes gluten a life threatening addition to their diet over time. For our weekly series, "Eat This!" we talk about the gluten free diet with restaurateur and co-author of Cooking for Your Gluten-Free Teen: Everyday Meals Your Whole Family Will Love, Carlyn Berghoff and WBEZ producer Monica Eng.
  4. Author seeks solace, finds meaning at monastery - Religion reporter Judy Valente first visited Mount St. Scholastica Monastery in Kansas to teach but decided to stay as a student. Her time at the monastery offered her a chance to reflect on how her spiritual life was disrupted by other challenges in her life. Her new book, Atchison Blue: A Search for Silence, a Spiritual Home, and a Living Faith, contains key lessons from her experience and she shares some with us.

  6. Alex Cuba: live and acoustic Alex Cuba burst onto the scene by winning a Juno in 2006.  He picked up another in 2008, and a Grammy in 2010. Since then, it’s been full steam ahead for the Cuban born singer-songwriter, wowing audiences around the world with his mix of Latin, African, Funk and Rock. Before he heads out of town, he’ll perform solo and acoustic on the Morning Shift.
