'Eight Forty-Eight' for 08.30.12

Thursday on Eight Forty-Eight, we talk about the Illinois credit rating and enjoy a tribute to Von Freeman with Kahil El'Zabar, Frank Catalano and Richard Steele.

  1. On Wednesday, the ratings agency Standard & Poor’s downgraded Illinois from A to A-plus, citing the state’s inability to solve problems with funding pensions. Brian Battle with Trust Capital Partners explains the implications.
  2. After that, we'll remember Earle Lavon “Von” Freeman, the famed Chicago tenor saxophonist who once told Tony Sarabia that he was never meant to be a teacher. Saxophonist Frank Catalano and percussionist Kahil El’Zabar strongly disagree. The two musicians, who both played with Von Freeman, and WBEZ’s Richard Steele join to discuss the legacy of one of Chicago’s greats.
  3. Von Freeman and Studs Terkel spoken word and saxophone improvisation 1997
  4. Both the Chicago Jazz Festival and the African Festival of the Arts will pay homage to Freeman this weekend:
  5. And, finally, a quick shout out to some 16-inch champions:
