Hank Blank followed the path that many college students are currently on.
He obtained two degrees, got an entry-level job as an advertising professional, got various promotions and was even became partner of an advertising firm in Orange County, California.
But one night in early 2001, he received the news over the phone that he was being let go from his position.
All of a sudden, he found himself in a peculiar situation and needed to get back on his feet.
Instead of wallowing in self-pity, he created a job for himself four days later as a consultant and as a result, he is more successful and happier than ever.
You can Google his name and see how pages he has.
Many professionals are losing their jobs left and right.
These same people were aiming for their next promotion and did everything they could to keep their jobs because in their minds, it was the "safest" thing to do.
They didn't think about the possibility that they could get fired and didn't see the need to be prepared because they thought that it wouldn't happen to them.
In this day and age, with many companies merging together and departments are getting phased out, no job is safe.
What they should be doing to prepare for the inevitable is building their online presence.
Whether it's by blogging, hosting a podcast, or making YouTube videos, they would be ahead of the game and even become a go-to expert in the field.
It's not a question of if they are going to lose their position, but when you are going to lose it.
So what are you waiting for?
