Japan-Hawaii Economic Summit

Presented by the U.S.-Japan Council and the State of Hawaii Department of Business, Economic Development & Tourism (DBEDT), this three day summit fostered tangible near and long term economic opportunities among Japanese prefectures, the State of Hawaii, and the continental U.S.

  1. Co-Chairs Tyler Tokioka and Lori Teranishi kicked off the first Japan-Hawaii Economic Summit at the welcome reception! DBEDT hosted the reception, providing a cordial welcome to all guests participating in the Summit at the Mauna Lani Bay Hotel. All of the guests enjoyed networking along with tasty food, scenic views, and live performances.

  6. On the second day, Governor David Ige welcomed the crowd. Panel discussions included "Business Bridges," "Innovations in Education," "Tourism" and the "Governors' Panel." Keynote speakers were Masaaki Tanaka (Senior Global Advisor, PwC International), and Robert Harrison (Chairman, First Hawaiian Bank).

  8. Day two wrapped up with attendees mingling while they enjoyed a cocktail reception, dinner and a wonderful view!

  11. The third day kicked off with breakfast and business networking, followed by panels on the food industry and how Hawaii and Japan can collaborate, as well as a panel on renewable energy.

  14. The summit concluded at Puu Waawaa Ranch, with demonstrations from Vincent Paul Ponthieux (Director & CTO of Blue Planet Research) and Henk Rogers (Founder & CEO of Blue Planet Research), who owns the ranch. Mr. Rogers was also a part of an earlier panel discussion involving renewable energy, in which he reflected on his years of research in the field.
