Social media buzz: POW Sgt. Bergdahl released, 'Cosmos' makes science accessible

Two issues that got USA TODAY Opinion readers talking this week: the return of Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl in a trade with the Taliban, and the 'Cosmos' series that teaches science to viewers in a dynamic manner.

  1. Was trade for Bergdahl worth it?

  2. AP
  3. Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl was released on May 31 after five years in captivity thanks to President Obama, who decided to trade five Taliban soldiers from Guantanamo Bay for Bergdahl's safe return. The trade has come under major scrutiny this week over allegations of law breaking and whether Bergdahl deserted his platoon while in Afghanistan.
  4. Our view: The return of Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl in exchange for the release of five Taliban members was worth it because "no service member gets left behind."

  5. What people said inside USA TODAY:
  6. An American soldier is an American soldier, right? Don't deserters deserve the same leave-no-soldier-behind rescue efforts extended to anyone else? Only if they are brought up on charges!
  7. It doesn't matter what any previous president has done. Each action stands on it's own. Just because my father did something wrong, doesn't make it okay for me to do it. Obama is smarter than we think. Everything is going right to his plan.
  8. I agree. We can't leave our troops behind. If a reasonable chance comes up to bring him home we must do so. Heck......I don't remember all this whining and crying about a troop coming home when Sen. McCain was a POW. His folks wanted him home. He came home when many other troops didn't............
  9. Here's what people were saying outside USA TODAY:
  10. Has the return of the series Cosmos helped educate more people?

  11. Host Neil deGrasse Tyson will star in the final Cosmos episode this Sunday on Fox at 9 p.m. EST. The show has been widely popular and some say that it is reminding viewers of the importance of science.
  12. Here's what people said inside USA TODAY:
  13. This is the best "new" show by far, it is intelligent, very well scripted and they do their very best to get all people of different levels of education a view into space that only a few had the luxury of seeing just a short time ago. Lets hope it stays on for a very long time...
  14. I absolutely love the show. Its great to see a show about science have such widespread success. My only criticism is that there has been a little too much of a focus on history and not enough regarding the universe and what we have learned in the past 5 to 10 years.
