Gov. Rick Scott visits St. Lucie Lock

In the wake of public criticism, Gov. Rick Scott visited the St. Lucie Lock and Dam in Martin County on Tuesday. There he witnessed firsthand the effects of Lake Okeechobee discharges into the St. Lucie Estuary.

  1. Before Scott's visit, opponents of the discharges took to Twitter and Instagram to rally protesters to greet the governor.
  2. The night before his visit, Scott's office released a letter from the governor to the Army Corps of Engineers, calling for more active involvement in solving the problem of Lake Okeechobee releases and committing $40 million in next year's Florida budget to completing the C-44 project that would help the St. Lucie Estuary and southern Indian River Lagoon.
  3. Early Tuesday afternoon, the park near the St. Lucie Lock and Dam became ground zero for about 500 protesters who piled in to await Scott's arrival.
