On the mind of many in the United States: Student loan debt

  2. This Youtube video details the story of a girl named Jessie, who has racked up 90,000 dollars of student debt after graduating in 2010. Interestingly, she hints that her ignorance towards her debts when she took them out is why she's in the trouble she's in now.

Annamaria Lusardi, the Denit Trust Chair of Economics and Accountancy at the George Washington University School of Business, further goes into the ignorance of the students taking out these loans. She mentions that nearly half of people aged 18 to 34 own at least one student loan. Of those, a fifth don't even know the terms of their loan.
  5. Maureen Henderson in this article shares the same sentiment as Lusardi saying that when taking out loans students are saying are adopting an "out of sight, out of mind" mentality towards their loans.

  7. A possible lack of knowledge about their student loans has caused for a growing feeling of panic, embarrassment, and sadness about the looming debt over the heads of an entire generation of college students.
