  1. It's only June, but already it's been a great year for recognition of the role that stage management play in the entertainment industry. Stage Manager Dency Nelson made international news back in February, as he retired after 25 years working on The Oscars. The 2013 Olivier Awards saw the stage management teams at English National Opera and The Royal Opera House nominated for "Outstanding Achievement in Opera". More recently, American Production Stage Manager Peter Lawrence was honoured at The Tony Awards for "Excellence in the Theatre". Well, The Stage Management Association have been celebrating the work of stage managers in the UK for years with The National Awards for Stage Management. June 12th saw the 2013 ceremony, hosted by The ABTT Theatre Show, sponsored by The Stage Newspaper and GDS, with prizes from The Stage, The Stage Management Association and Flints Theatrical Chandlery.

We'd been tweeting about this year's awards for months, asking our network of followers to get nominating and to spread the word amongst the theatre community. They did a fine job of this and, as the ceremony approached, tweets of anticipation and the good luck messages also started to pop up...
  2. The ceremony started at noon, led by SMA Executive Director Andy Rowley and with Individual and Team awards presented by Indhu Rubasingham, Artistic Director of The Tricycle Theatre and Hugh Comerford, MD of our main sponsor, The Stage.
  3. Winner of the Individual Award went to Linda Hapgood, Stage Manager of London Wall at The Finborough Theatre. Winners of both this and the team category were presented with SMA Membership and Hamlet cartoons, courtesy of The Stage.
  4. This was a hotly contended category, with numerous nominations, but highly commended were Nicola Barrett, Company Manager for Third Finger, Left Hand at Trafalgar 2, and Helen Sennett, Company Stage Manager for Grange Park Opera Season.
  5. Winner of the Team Award went to Robin Longley, Rebecca James & Andy Guard for A Midsummer Nights Dream, Bristol Old Vic Theatre Company.
