2014 World Cup Send-Off Series Game 1 live blog: U.S. vs. Azerbaijan

Join us at 7 p.m. PT/10 p.m. ET for live coverage of the United States' first World Cup tune-up match, against Azerbaijan at historic Candlestick Park in San Francisco.

  1. That's all for now! Thank you for joining us for this live look at the U.S.'s first World Cup tune-up match against Azerbaijan. We'll have further coverage throughout the evening from San Francisco and off-site.
  2. 2. This game seemed pretty pointless. No opponent in Group G will play like Azerbaijan, and the U.S. won't be asked to set the tempo or take initiative in any of its group matches.
  3. A couple thoughts:
    1. If the U.S. plays like this against Ghana, Portugal and/or Germany, it will be a very short and painful World Cup.
  4. FT | United States 2, Azerbaijan 0.
  5. Jóhannsson can score and tweet at the same time, apparently.
  6. 87' | Jermaine Jones goes down holding his face. Timmy Chandler stands over him, gives him an encouraging slap and tells him to get up. He does.
  7. Ok, now I believe we will win. #vsco #vscocam #vscogrid #vscophile #usavaze #usmnt #thestick

  9. Two set pieces, two goals. Not much created in the run of play. Don't be fooled by the scoreline. The U.S. has a lot of room for improvement.
  10. 81' | GOAL: Aron Jóhannsson does what Chris Wondolowski couldn't, which is turn in an unmarked header from six yards out. Easy goal with a packed six-yard box.
  11. 79' | Yedlin is down after a rough tackle. Perhaps some payback for the youngster taking out an Azerbaijani player just after coming onto the field. He pops back up and will continue.
  12. If that's the winner, it only serves to mask what has been a very average game. Then again, it was an average goal as well, so it fits the narrative.
  13. 75' | GOAL: Finally, the U.S. breaks through. In keeping with the way the rest of the game has transpired, it was a chaotic ball into the box that caused it. Michael Bradley had his shot saved off the line, and substitute Mix Diskerud puts home the rebound.
  14. 71' | Final U.S. sub: Alejandro Bedoya off, Mix Diskerud on.

  16. 66' | The U.S. is getting close to the Azerbaijani penalty area on multiple occasions but still having trouble penetrating the fortress that is the packed-in defense.
  17. 62' | U.S. subs: Chris Wondolowski off, Aron Jóhannsson on. Fabian Johnson off, DeAndre Yedlin on.
  18. Vogts, the Azerbaijan manager and U.S. assistant, has been very animated on the sidelines.
