A group of 39 students and 4 staff undertook an exciting field class to the Naples region of Italy in April 2016 to investigate the volcanic risks and hazards of the region...

  1. The trip included climbing Mount Vesuvius to look over the Bay of Naples and discuss the evacuation plan for the city in the light of further eruptions; an exploration of the volcanic activity still going on in the region at Solfatara and a visit and tour of the Vesuvius Observatory, the oldest in the world; and a visit to Pompeii and Oplontis to witness the effects of the AD 79 eruption on the Roman cities surrounding Vesuvius. Finally, we finished up with a tour of a vineyard to investigate the advantages of being near a volcano for the viticulture and the obligatory tasting of the wine….!
