  2. This says it all: Titus Kaphar’s “Billy Lee: Portrait in Tar,” 2016, a painting of one of George Washington’s slaves, next to William Rush’s sculpture “George Washington,” 1817, based on a drawing taken from life. Included in a small but potent exhibition,”Making History Visible,” which considers the the politics of representation underlying the genres of portraiture and history painting in American art. Part of the campus-wide initiative, Princeton and Slavery. #tituskaphar @princetonu_artmuseum #princetonuniversityartmuseum #princetonandslavery #portraiture #americanhistory

  5. Titus Kaphar’s “Impressions of Liberty,” 2017, commemorates the 1766 sale of six enslaved African Americans on this site. They belonged to the estate of Samuel Finley, the fifth president of Princeton University who was living in this house on campus at the time of his death. Kaphar’s powerful sculpture was commissioned as part of the Princeton and Slavery Project. #tituskaphar #monuments @princeton_university #princetonandslavery #americanhistory
