A year of pilgrimage in Ireland

Pilgrimage takes place in Ireland throughout the year, here are some of the highlights of the many pilgrimages I have attended and documented in 2016 and previous years.

  1. January beings with a pilgrimage to St Dominics Holy Well in Esker Co Galway on the feast of the Epiphany. The waters from this well provide cures for animals but not people.

  3. The feast of St Ita of Kileedy the 15th of January is still well remembered and people still visit the ruins of the monastery founded by the saint at Kileeday Co Limerick.
  4. February begins with the feast of St Brigit on the 1st of February. Pilgrims attend the holy places and relics associated with the saint all over Ireland on the 1st of February.

  6. The Feast of St Gobnait takes place on the 12 February. People visit her holy well at Ballyvourney Co Cork and Duinquin Co Kerry.

  8. March begins with the feast of St David. Pilgrims visit his holy well at Ballyslanney Olygate in Co Wexford, on the eve , the feast day and day proceeding the feast. The waters are held to have curative powers.

  10. The 17th of March is the feast of St Patrick. There are many places associated with the saint still visited by pilgrims on this day. St Patrick's well at Glassely Co Kildare is one of my favourite pilgrimages.

  12. The 18th of April is the feast of St Laserian of Old Leighlin Co Carlow. A pilgrimage takes place Old Leighlin Cathedral each year. It is the only pilgrimage I know of presided over by both the Church of Ireland and Catholic Bishops who lead pilgrims in a procession from the Cathedral to the holy well dedicated to the saint at the edge of the village.

  14. May is a busy month of pilgrimage. One of the 1st pilgrimages of the month of May is at a place called "The City" at Shrone Co Kerry. In 2016 the bishop of Kerry said mass here.

  16. The pilgrimage at St Ingheen Bui holy well at Drumtarriff Co Cork is another early pilgrimage taking place on the 6th of May.
  17. Pilgrims also visit Cranavan Holy well in Carlow. A mass is said and well attended. For many years the well tradition was kept alive by the people of the townland who visite the well on the 1st sunday of May.
  18. The feast day of St Colmcille is the 9th of June and pilgrimage to the saint at Durrow Co Offaly literally stops traffic
  19. A pilgrimage mass is always held in June at St Patrick's Holy Well on the outskirts of Clonmel, Co Tipperary

  21. The feast of St John the baptist coincides with mid Summer. There are many holy wells associated with the saint around Ireland and pilgrims still visit the holy well dedicated to the saint at Mushera Co Cork.
  22. The feast of St Killian is celebrated at on July 8th at Mullagh Co Cavan, in the parish of Tuosist, near Kenmare and Wurzburg in Germany

  24. Weather permitting on the 16th of July each year many people visit the Island of St MacDara off the coast of Connemara, Co Galway.
  25. The feast day of St Declan the 24th of July is celebrated at the holy wells of Toor and Ardmore both in Co Waterford.
  26. Pilgrims also gather at the monastery of St Moling at St Mullins Co Carlow on the last sunday before the 25th of July.

  28. One of Irelands most popular pilgrimages takes place on Reek Sunday the last Sunday of July when pilgrims gather and climb to the summit of Croagh Patrick in Co Mayo. The mountain is associated with St Patrick.

  31. August 15th is the annual pilgrimage to Caher Island Co Mayo

  33. Pilgrimage at Clonmacnoise takes place each year on the Sunday closest to the feast day of St Ciaran 9th September, up until relatively recently the pilgrimage lasted the month of September.

  35. October the 29th is the feast day of St Colman Mac Duagh , pilgrims still visit holy places associated with the saint in Co Galway.

  37. November is a cold month but many pilgrims brave the elements to perform pilgrimage

  40. St Flannan is one of the few Irish saints to attract pilgrims in December. His feast is the 18th of December and pilgrims still visit a number of holy places associated with him in Co Clare.
  41. The pilgrimage calendar ends at St Anastasia's holy well near Lahinch Co Clare. The well is visited each Christmas eve.
