Twitter took note when President Barack Obama offered a lighter moment during his Thursday joint press conference with Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan: as the rain came down in Washington, the president summoned Marines, who held umbrellas over the leaders’ heads.
“Why don’t we get a couple Marines, they’re going to look good next to us,” Obama said, as Marines appeared by the sides of the leaders, wielding oversize black umbrellas.
“I’ve got a change of suits. But I don’t know about our prime minister,” he said to the amused audience.
Capt. Jack Norton, spokesman for the Marine Barracks of Washington, told POLITICO that Marines aren’t allowed to hold umbrellas over their own heads while in uniform, but can hold them over others.
